PM Hasina congratulates Sri Lanka president on winning election

Prime minister Sheikh Hasina has congratulated Sri Lankan president Gotabaya Rajapaksa on his electoral win and invited him to visit Bangladesh.
The message was conveyed in person on Friday afternoon by M Riaz Hamidullah, the Bangladesh high commissioner in Colombo, as the latter met the newly elected Sri Lankan president at his office to hand over the signed letter of Bangladesh prime minister.

The high commissioner told Prothom Alo that, while receiving him at the President Secretariat, the Sri Lankan president recalled deeper ties between the two people and the engagements that flourished during the earlier Rajapaksa government (2005-14).

Gotabaya Rajapaksa also recalled Bangladesh's support in development of agriculture and inland fisheries in Sri Lanka earlier.

The Sri Lankan president was much encouraged to receive from the high commissioner the book 'Buddhist Heritage in Bangladesh' and also a 13-minute video documentary on Bangladesh Buddhist heritage produced by the mission in 2018, in English and Singhalese languages.

The high commissioner drew his attention on the need to advance the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka as well as Chattogram-Colombo shipping agreement. The Sri Lankan president assured of his support for the implementation of both FTA and shipping connectivity between the two countries.
