Under a deadline set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), all passports have been required to meet machine-readable standards by 25 November 2015. Hand-written passports are no longer accepted for international travel. Bangladesh High Commission in Sri Lanka has stopped issuing hand-written passports.

Holders of Bangladesh passports may replace their existing hand-written passports with Machine Readable Passports (MRPs). Bangladesh High Commission in Sri Lanka has been issuing MRP since January 2014.

If any Bangladesh national is still holding a hand-written passport, he or she is being strongly advised  to replace his/her hand-written passport with Machine Readable Passport (MRP) immediately.

The applicants are requested to read the following instructions to obtain MRP:


Application form for MRP:

  • Applicants may collect passport form from the counter of the Consular Section of High Commission or obtain it online  here at this web site.

Documents to be attached with application for MRP:

  • Two copies of recent passport size photograph
  • Photocopy of National ID Card/Birth Certificate (17 Digit)
  • Photocopy of old passport (first 03 pages) on A4 size paper
  • Photocopy of identity card and letter from the educational institution on A4 size paper (for student rate of processing fee)
  • Non-refundable processing fee

Process for MRP:

  • Applicants are requested to submit at appropriate consular hours one copy of duly filled-in application form along with the supporting documents including processing fee
  • Payment of processing fee should be made in local currency to the counter
  • Processing fee: LKR 15,000/- for all applicants except LKR 4,500/- for students
  • At the time of submission, applicants will be informed of schedule of appointment for the data enrolment and photograph taking (usually 07 days from submission)
  • MRPs are printed at Department of Immigration and Passports in Dhaka, and delivery date is subject to receipt from Dhaka (usually 30-45 days from submission)
  • Applicants will be asked over phone to collect passport, when received from Dhaka and ready for delivery
